What is a Forest Playschool?

Forest Schools offer children the opportunity to take part in regular sessions outdoors. It is part of the ethos that these take place in all weathers in a woodland or natural environment.

Forest Schools is different from other outdoor learning approaches as the sessions occur regularly and over a long period of time. Forest Schools aim for the children to develop a relationship with the natural world.

The approach is thought to be relatively new, but actually originated in Scandinavia in nineteenth century.

Risk management

Children are supported to manage risks appropriate to the environment and themselves, for example how to safely climb a tree.

Forest School sessions can only be delivered by L3 qualified practitioners. While there are many outdoor learning approaches, the Forest Schools approach has been chosen by Adventure Playschool to allow staff to create a safe environment and perimeters in which, when appropriate, children can access a broad variety of experiences including toasting marshmallows on the fire.

Research studies surrounding the Forest Schools approach have identified a range of benefits. The Forest School Training Company list these as:
